Washington State is the second largest wine producer in the country, behind California. The US government recognizes approximately 200 wine growing regions and 14 of them are in Washington State. In the state, there are 1,000 wineries and on average 4 new ones open every month. The Yakima Valley was the first AVA recognized in Washington State in 1983 and is part of the larger Columbia Valley AVA. Nearly 40% of the wine produced in Washington comes from this AVA. The valley is home to more than 17,000 acres of vineyards and nearly 120 wineries.
